Since the start of the Covid-19 vaccine rollout, several have been reluctant to take the shot. Of all the hurdles that could potentially be a cause behind the lack of Covid-19 vaccine uptake, Trypanophobia, more commonly known as needle phobia, remains the most common reason.

It is defined as the extreme fear of medical procedures that involve injections or hypodermic needles. People with needle phobia avoid important routine health check-ups, blood work, vaccinations, and flu shots. The fear can be a result of hypersensitivity to pain or a deep-rooted distrust after having seen a close one suffer.

Cleveland Clinic Psychologist, Dr. Susan Albers calls it a clinical diagnosis that impacts millions around the world. People with needle phobia might experience lower or higher blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, elevated heart rate, and feelings of emotional or physical aggression. Some might also experience insomnia a couple of days before taking the vaccine.

High levels of needle fear can derail vaccination programs. This acts as a matter of concern especially during the current global pandemic where every dose counts.

Doctors suggest that when you reach the vaccine center, focus on the positive, try and distract yourself from what is happening, make sure to tell the nurse about your phobia ahead of the shot and it may also be helpful to bring someone along for support.
