Mera Naam Joker, a classic, is the story of Raju (Raj Kapoor), a clown, who must make his audience laugh at the cost of his own sorrows. Ever since his father died in a trapeze accident, Raju's traumatised mother tries to keep him away from the circus. However, the circus is Raju's calling and he has a natural affinity for it. The movie chronicles Raju's life story in 3 chapters. The first chapter shows an adolescent Raju (Rishi Kapoor), and deals with his infatuation with his teacher, Mary, who eventually gets married to her fiance. Through this heartbreak, Raju, realises that his true calling is that of a joker. This marks the beginning of the second chapter in Raju's life, as he joins Gemini Circus, owned by Mahendra Singh (Dharmendra), who hires Raju to play the circus clown. Here he meets, Marina (Ksenia Ryabinkina), the lead trapezist of a Russian circus group and Raju falls for Marina. But Marina eventually leaves for Russia, leading to a second heartbreak for Raju. Meanwhile Raju's mother also passes away watching Raju perform the very same stunt which lead to her husband's death. In the final chapter, Raju, now out of the circus and living aimlessly, meets Meenu (Padmini) who harbours dreams of becoming an actress. They set up a small circus, and move on to the world of theatre. However, once again Raju's heart is broken when Meenu is offered a movie and she moves on. To each of these woman that Raju fell in love with, he gave one his most prized possessions, a beloved doll, which belonged to his father, only to see it returned to him. The doll is a metaphor for Raju's simple heart which loves with abundance, but is broken time and again. Will Raju ever find true love that he so desperately seeks?
