Rupa (Zeenat Aman) grows up being tagged as 'unlucky' in her village. Her mother dies during childbirth, and later a kitchen accident leaves the left half of her face disfigured. This movie is an artistic exploration of beauty and the society's view on it. Rajeev (Shashi Kapoor), a stereotypical man who happens to be a successful engineer, falls in love with Rupa after hearing her divine voice. He proposes marriage to her, but when he sees her scarred face after marriage, he abandons her, only to continue nightly dalliance with another beautiful woman. Who is this other woman? Will Rajeev be able to rise above his pettiness?
