The emerging mutant strains of the Corona Virus have baffled scientists the world over. Though a lot of advances have been made in identifying the risk factors, what is still not clear is the logic behind the varying susceptibility, severity and outcome of the disease in people.

Scientists at the University of Southampton believe that Covid-19 is a complex and multi-system disease that impacts the ‘redox’ balance of the human body. Redox exchange reactions are the foundation of the human bodys ability to fight diseases.

The study arrived at three basic conclusions related to the “redox” balance of the human body - firstly there is a need to have a deeper understanding of how the virus affects the regulatory function of the endothelium, which is the inner lining of blood vessels that helps regulate oxygen and nutrients exchange. Secondly, they were able to establish a clear relation between nutrition and the degree of immunity exhibited by different people. Lastly how reduced Nitric Oxide availability in the human system results in an “Oxidative Storm” that depletes their ability to cope with the Virus stress.

Researchers believe that a deeper understanding of these issues would help in improving diagnosis and ensure we are better prepared to handle future pandemics and reduce mortality by providing better treatment.
