Synopsis

Shankar Rai is very close to his friend, Banwariya. She moves elsewhere, while he stays with his family, consisting of his father, mother, and his cousin brother, Suresh. Ram Bharose, a marriage broker, arranges Shankar’s marriage with Madhumati (Banwariya) and Suresh's marriage with Shanta. Their traditions do not permit couples to meet each other before their marriage. They plan to switch places and meet each other’s bride. Shankar is convinced of Shanta and conveys the same to Suresh. Meanwhile, Suresh is smitten by Madhumati and gets her to marry him, while Shanta gets married to Shankar. While Madhumati and Suresh are happy with each other, Shanta leaves Shankar as she realizes that he cannot read and write. Shankar is told to get her back but gets humiliated by her and her father. He then sets on a path of self-destruction on knowing that Madhumati is none other than his dear childhood friend, Banwariya.
