Amrit is the journey of two lonely and old people, both ill-treated by their children, who find solace in each other. Kamla (Smita Patil) is a widow living with her self-centered son and hostile daughter-in-law. She meets widower Amrit (Rajesh Khanna) when he brings his grandson to play on a park. Kamla then meets with an accident and Amrit goes to her house to meet her and realises how poorly she's being treated by her own family. Their shared plight brings them close to each other and Amrit and Kamla decide to separate from their respective children and spend the rest of their lives together. How will the society and their children react to their decision? Can Amrit and Kamala stand up against the accepted social norms?
