Najma (Smita Patil) lives in Mumbai as the mistress of Akhtar (Bharat Kapoor), whose promises of marriage to her remain unfulfilled. The middle-aged Dubai-returned mentor of Akhtar, Shakar Ali Khan (B. L. Chopra) comes to Mumbai to find himself a young, virgin bride. He convinces the pair to take him to Hyderabad, Najma’s hometown, for this purpose. Convinced that Khan would make him rich, Akhtar persuades Najma to accompany them. Najma arranges for Shakar's wedding with Shabnam, not knowing that her own brother is in love with her. This fateful marriage not only breaks up an innocent couple but also leads the bride to commit suicide. Bazaar effectively highlights the harsh marital realities, moral corruption and the plight of women at the hands of misogynistic men.
