A well respected Shahnai player in a town named Bapu plays only for religious events and does not believe in performing simply to make money. His mother is proud of him for this very reason, but she is quick to disown him when he falls in love with a lavani dancer Radha, whom he saves from an abduction attempt. Radha dies soon after giving birth to a daughter and Bapu is left to raise his daughter Sandhya on his own. Upon growing up, Sandhya falls in love with Arun, the son of a famous industrialist. But Arun's father not only dismisses the match when he learns about Sandhya's lineage but also belittles Bapu's art. The story traces Bapu's struggle throughout his life for a simple decision of marrying a lavani dancer.
