The life of Mohan Sharma (Tarun Bose) changes dramatically after his wife dies while giving birth to their daughter, Uma (Sharmila Tagore). Blaming Uma for the tragedy, he never forgives her, but is affectionate towards her under the influence of alcohol. Uma grows up being quiet, submissive and meek, yearning for her father’s acceptance. When she meets a sensitive poet, Ashok (Dharmendra), he brings her out of her shell and they fall in love.
