Raj Kumar (Raj Kapoor) is a painter by profession, but is unable to earn a steady living, as a result of which he cannot pay rent to his loud but kind-hearted landlady, Mrs. D'sa (Lalita Pawar). One day, Raj finds a wallet containing money and he returns it to the owner, Ramnath (Motilal). Pleased with his honesty, Ramnath hires Raj. Here he meets a maidservant, Asha (Nutan) and they soon fall in love, but Raj distances himself when he learns that Asha is in fact Ramnath's niece. Meanwhile Mrs. D'Sa takes ill and suddenly passes away. After conducting a post-mortem, police discover that Mrs. D'Sa was poisoned. Raj is taken for questioning and is subsequently jailed. To prove his innocence Raj plans to escape from prison to gather evidence. Is Raj successful in his plans? Is he able to uncover the mystery behind Mrs. D'Sa's death?
