A poor villager (Raj Kapoor) comes to the city looking for employment. Arriving at night, thirsty and hungry, he enters an apartment complex in search of water only to get tangled up in a mad cat-and-mouse chase. Mistaking him for a thief, the residents try to hunt him down while he takes refuge in different apartments where he witnesses shady undertakings. Ironically, these misdeeds are being committed by so-called 'respectable' citizens of the city, who lead one life during the day and a completely different one at night. How does the villager come out of this situation?
