Anand (Dev Anand) is a spendthrift grandson of a rich businessman Rai Bahadur (Nazir Hussain) who wants him to marry Rekha (Indira), the only daughter and the heiress of a rich man, despite Anand's disinterest in her. In the ensuing fight, Anand leaves his house to prove his worthiness and ends up on the streets of Mumbai. Homeless and in need of work, he meets a young woman named Renu (Sadhana Shivdasani) and falls in love with her. But Renu is hiding a secret of her own. What happens when Rai Bahadur tracks down the whereabouts of his grandson and threatens to expose Renu's secret as a means to get back to him?
