Coming from the Devdasi tradition, Usha is exploited from a young age. First by her self-seeking husband, Keshav Dalvi (Amol Palekar), who wants to thrive on her talent by managing her career. When she gets a sense of what he is up to, she tries to find companionship in a reigning star Rajan (Anant Nag) who claims to love her but eventuallly rejects her. Even a director (Naseeruddin Shah) who charms Usha with his long-winded theories on love and life eventually chickens out. Tired of everything and eager to lead a regular home life, she finds hope in Vinayak Kale (Amrish Puri), a wealthy businessman. But in his palatial bungalow, Usha is deprived of any kind of freedom. Where will Usha's life lead her? Will she ever find true happiness?
