Two Lucknow-based Muslim men fall in love with Sultanat (Mala Sinha). One of them is a prince (Raaj Kumar) while the other is a poet named Akhtar (Jeetendra). Sultanat marries Akhtar which breaks the prince's heart but he comes to terms with it. Years later, Akhtar gets drawn to a lavish, carefree lifestyle. He begins to overlook his domestic duties and emotionally wanders off. In an angry confrontation, he divorces his wife and abandons his son. The prince tries to help them but when people gossip about their innocent relationship, he offers to marry Sultanat to save her grace. While Sultanat accepts the prince as her husband, will she also accept him as a lover?
