Gopal (Dr. Shree Ram Lagoo) discovers that he has lung cancer. Not wanting his daughters and wife Asha (Nutan) to be depressed, he decides to get a job transfer in Mumbai and hide his illness from them. After his departure, the youngest daughter befriends their new neighbour, Raj Kumar (Rajendra Kumar), who happens to be Asha's lover from the past. Their promises of a marriage remained unfulfilled because Raj went abroad for further studies and meanwhile, Asha was married off to Gopal.
