A story of love, lust and deceit, Rajat (Rajesh Khanna), a music composer falls in love with Mukta (Smita Patil) a wealthy heiress. After marriage, Rajat rapidly climbs the ladder of success and becomes a renowned music composer. Sheetal (Priti Sapru), an upcoming performer tries to woo Rajat but fails to do so. Meanwhile, Mukta begins to suspect Rajat of having an affair with their beautiful housemaid (Sridevi). Taking advantage of the growing distance between the couple, Sheetal gets them separated. However, the story takes a sharp turn when Sheetal is killed and Rajat becomes the prime suspect in the case.
