Maharaja Balbirsingh (Ashok Kumar), the King of Himmatpur, runs his empire and his household with an iron fist. This high-handed behaviour results in all four of his children drifting away from him. His intimidation also leads to his eldest daughter, Hemlata (Nanda) getting paralysed in her lower limbs. A new doctor hired for her treatment, Sanjay (Sunil Dutt) turns out to be their saviour. Sanjay not only disregards the obsolete protocols that suppress fun and laughter in the house but also brings joy into the lives of the King's children. His positivity gives them a much-needed push to rebel against their father, much to the Emperor's chagrin.
