Synopsis

The fascinating journey of Shabana Azmi, ‘the Queen of Natural Acting’ continues in this episode. The period from 1980 to 1984 can be called the golden period of Shabana Azmi’s career when she went on to deliver hits after hits, both on the mainstream as well as off-beat movies front. She won the Best Actress National awards continuously for 3 years in a row and Filmfare awards for 2 years in a row. Shabana could go to any lengths to get into the skin of the character, like she gained a lot of weight for the Madam’s role in ‘Mandi’. Or years later, she shaved off her head for Deepa Mehta’s ‘Water’. She showed a lot of courage in playing the unconventional character of Radha in Deepa Mehta’s ‘Fire’ that raised a huge controversy on its release in 1996. An actor of Shabana’s calibre cannot lie down low and she has been very active even post 2000s, trying out different characters in India and abroad. The episode also touches upon her other pursuits as well as her personal life. With enormous understanding and perspective, Shabana Azmi is the undisputed queen of her territory and it is highly unlikely that Indian film industry shall find a suitable heir to carry forward her legacy.
