Synopsis
A painter by training, an actor by accident, a producer by compulsion but a director by choice ! That’s Amol Palekar, fondly known as ‘the-boy-next-door’ because of the simple and lovable characters he played in ‘Rajanigandha’, ‘Chhoti Si Baat’, ‘Chitchor’, ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’and ‘Golmaal’. Amol began acting in Marathi theatre and later started his own group ‘Aniket’. He made his debut in 1971 with the noted Marathi film ‘Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe’ directed by Satyadev Dubey before being launched by Basu Chatterjee in ‘Rajanigandha’ (1974). Amol Palekar specialized in the roles of an ‘aam aadmi’ and the typical situations faced by the common man in day-to-day life. Most of his "middle-class" comedies were directed either by Basu Chatterjee or Hrishikesh Mukherjee. A very fine actor known for underplaying his roles, Amol Palekar excelled in serious roles too in films like ‘Bhumika’, ‘Apne Paraye’, ‘Aanchal’, ‘Ankahee’ and ‘Khamosh’. He turned to direction with ‘Aakriet’ in Marathi and went on to direct several award winning films in Marathi and Hindi. SCREEN LEGENDS pays a tribute to the multi-faceted Amol Palekar who carved out his own niche in the era of the ‘Angry Young Man’ and still makes an occasional appearance in films, television and web series whenever the role demands an actor of his calibre.
