Synopsis

If cuteness had a human face, then it would certainly be of Farooque Shaikh. His gentle demeanor and genuine smile added to his cuteness, making him unforgettable for many fans. Farooque Shaikh’s charm and warmth indeed made him a beloved figure in Indian cinema. Born in a wealthy zamindar family in Gujarat, Farooque’s father wanted him to be a lawyer. But Farooque had other plans. He fell in love with acting while studying at St. Xavier’s College and he soon performed in some plays staged by IPTA. One thing led to another and he was soon signed by M.S. Sathyu to play Balraj Sahni’s son in ‘Garm Hava’ (1973). He was noticed by Satyajit Ray who offered him a small role in his only Hindi feature film ‘Shatranj ke Khilari’ (1977). Farooque came into his own in the late 1970s with his author-backed role in Muzaffar Ali’s off-beat ‘Gaman’ and Yash Chopra’s mainstream ‘Noorie’. Farooque Shaikh became the toast of the middle-of-the-road Cinema in the early 1980s with hits like ‘Chashme Buddoor’, ‘Umrao Jaan’, ‘Saath Saath’, ‘Bazaar’, ‘Katha’, ‘Rang Birangi’ and ‘Lorie’. These films dealt with everyday issues and social concerns, presenting them in a more grounded and relatable manner. And Farooque brought a natural and understated style to his roles with subtlety and nuance. His hit pairing with Deepti Naval was often compared to the popular pairing of Dharmendra and Hema Malini. SCREEN LEGENDS Farooque Shaikh celebrates the actor who never chased stardom, did limited work; yet was always outstanding in the limited repertoire of his overall work for various media - be it films, television or stage. He would have done wonders in today’s ever-expanding platforms with meaningful content had destiny not snatched him away from us so early in life. An unmissable episode for all Hindi film fans!
