Hema Malini was introduced in the Hindi film industry as “The Dream Girl” and she ruled the industry really like a dream. She has seen unprecedented success as the longest reigning box-office queen for a decade and a half, when films sold solely on her name.
Born in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu, Hema Malini started learning classical dancing at the age of 5. She was considered for a Tamil film when she was 15 but director Sridhar rejected her as he felt she lacked star appeal. A strong willed Hema resolved to prove him wrong. She was soon launched in ‘Sapnon Ka Saudagar’(1968) opposite Raj Kapoor with the tagline ‘Raj Kapoor ki Dream-girl Hema Malini’. Little did she realise that she would soon become synonymous with dreams and also do a film called “Dream Girl” in future.
With several hits in 1969 and 1970, she zoomed to the top after ‘Johny Mera Naam’ opposite Dev Anand. Followed films like ‘Andaz’, ‘Lal Patthar’and ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’and there was no stopping the tsunami called ‘Hema Malini’.
