Mithun Chakraborty was flooded with small film offers after the success of ‘Surakshaa’ and ‘Taraana’. He soon came to be known as ‘The Poor Man’s Amitabh’. His style was unique, fresh and different and the audience simply loved him. In fact, Mithun actually competed with himself and had no rivals.
Mithun’s big ticket moment came when filmmaker B. Subhash offered him ‘Disco Dancer’. The film went on to break all records and Mithun Chakraborty not only became a superstar but also a household name globally. ‘Disco Dancer’ was a huge success in Russia, China, Europe, Middle East and Africa and the audience there went crazy dancing to Mithun’s steps and Bappi Lahiri’s tunes. There was no looking back for Mithun Chakraborty after that.
Mithun Chakraborty excelled in all kinds of films - action flicks, musicals, family dramas etc. He had more than a dozen releases every year till the early 90s and as many as 19 releases in 1989. He shifted to Ooty in the mid-90s to grow his hotel business but continued doing films from there. A winner of several awards including 3 National Awards, Mithun Chakraborty’s success story is no flash in the pan. Koi Shaque!
