Synopsis

The decade of 1980s brought in a lot of changes in Rekha’s life. She came to be known as ‘Khubsoorat’ Rekha, in the wake of her award-winning role in Hrishi Da’s film of the same name. Another important change in her life was the end of her association with Amitabh Bachchan. Yash Chopra managed a casting coup by bringing together Amitabh-Jaya-Rekha in Silsila (1981). Jaya’s return to acting after a break to play the wife, who finally wins over the husband put a stop to the gossip mills working overtime. ‘Silsila’ was Rekha’s last film with Amitabh. Rekha balanced her career smartly as along with mainstream movies like ‘Judaai’, ‘Maang Bharo Sajna’, ‘Ek Hi Bhool’, ‘Baseraa’’, she also acted in off-beat films like Muzaffar Ali’s ‘Umrao Jaan’, Shashi Kapoor’s ‘Kalyug’, ‘Vijeta’, ‘Utsav’ and Gulzar’s ‘Ijaazat’. Director Muzaffar Ali had remarked that Rekha had surpassed his own conception of ‘Umrao Jaan’, the role that fetched her the Best Actress National Award. Rekha continued to get author-backed roles in the 1990s when her contemporaries had switched to playing character roles. She also had a brief marriage with industrialist Mukesh Agarwal in 1990. Rekha’s longevity and the ability to reinvent herself has baffled many. Rekha’s reclusive nature also helped to build a mysterious aura around her. SCREEN LEGENDS Rekha Part 2 covers her journey from the 1980s to the present. Even at 60+, the charm of her personality and the glow on her face refuse to fade. She certainly is the Eternal and Ageless Diva of Bollywood.
