Synopsis

Shabana Azmi won 5 National Awards for Best Actress in a span of 25 years - right from her first release ‘Ankur’ in 1974 to ‘Godmother’ in 1999. After ‘Ankur’, she did off-beat films like ‘Parinay’ and ‘Nishant’ on the one hand and commercial films like ‘Ishk Ishk Ishk’ and ‘Fakira’ on the other. The success of ‘Fakira’ made Shabana Azmi a much sought-after actress and she starred in several jubilees after that. Her star image lent good support to her off-beat films which started getting decent releases and screens. Shabana won her 1st Best Actress Filmfare award for ‘Swami’. She also formed a hit pair with Rajesh Khanna and both gave several hits together. Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and Smita Patil became household names for filmmakers who wanted to make meaningful cinema.
