Synopsis
If unconventionality had a name then it had to be Smita Patil! Right from the social service atmosphere upbringing, to her taking up the job of a news caster, to her being a reluctant actress, to being the gold standard in acting, nothing was meant for someone ordinary. A bold and bindaas femme fatale, contrary to her screen persona, she got the National Award in her fourth film ‘Bhumika’, paving the way for being the flag bearer of the parallel cinema along with Shabana Azmi from the mid 70s to the mid 80s. Her grasp of the medium was such that like a chameleon she could adapt to the character being played on screen, making it hard to believe the versatility she possessed. Smita was also among the first pan-India actresses, making her mark in Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu and Bengali with equal felicity apart from Hindi. She was one of those rare actresses who was not lured by the magic of commercial films but chose to be fiercely loyal to meaningful cinema for 5 years of her film career. SCREEN LEGENDS : Smita Patil Part 1 pays a tribute to the extraordinary actress by taking the viewers through her earlier days and re-living her mesmerizing screen moments from films like ‘Bhumika’, ‘Nishant’, ‘Bazaar’ and ‘Mandi’
