Synopsis

Suraiya was the first female superstar and the last of the female singing-stars of Bollywood. Born in Lahore, she was the only child of her parents. Though, not formally trained in music, she went on to become the most successful singing star. She accidentally landed a role as young Mumtaz Mahal in ‘Taj Mahal’, when she accompanied her uncle to a film Studio. When Music Director Naushad heard her, he chose the 13-year old Suraiya to sing for heroine Mehtab in ‘Sharda’. After being launched as a singing-star in ‘Ishara’, Suraiya achieved national fame with K. Asif’s multi-starrer ‘Phool’. She got a major break as a heroine with ‘Tadbir’ at the recommendation of actor-singer K. L. Saigal. Suraiya scored heavily over her co-stars in ‘Anmol Ghadi’ and ‘Dard’. Her destiny changed when singer-actress Noorjahan migrated to Pakistan after Partition. There was no looking back for Suraiya who achieved unprecedented success for the next several years. No wonder she came to be known with three distinct titles:- ‘Malika-E-Husn’, ‘Malika-E-Tarannum’ aur ‘Malika-E-Adakari’. Screen Legends – SURAIYA Part 1 is a treat for all Bollywood buffs who not only get a chance to listen to her mesmerizing voice but also to watch her amazing performances.
