Synopsis

SOUTEN, a twentieth century tale takes its inspiration from the mythological anecdotes of Krishna (also known as Shyam), Radha and Rukmini. The names of its principal characters were also kept as Shyam, Rukmini and Radha played by Rajesh Khanna, Tina Munim and Padmini Kolhapure respectively. While Shyam loves the rich heiress Rukmini and marries her, his employee’s daughter Radha blindly worships Shyam because of his good deeds and virtues. But Rukmini suspects illicit relation between Radha and Shyam and considers Radha as her ‘Souten’. Finally, Radha takes a drastic step to clear her doubts and to reunite them. SOUTEN was shot extensively in Mauritius by producer – director Saawan Kumar. The film was a blockbuster hit because of its performances, the real-life romance between Khanna and Tina, and of course, the chartbuster music by Usha Khanna. Interestingly, Saawan Kumar and his wife Usha Khanna were already divorced before SOUTEN was launched but that didn’t stop them from associating professionally and the end-result was simply amazing. Episode 14 of GOLDEN CLASSICS not only re-visits the 1983 blockbuster ‘Souten’ and its hit music but also offers rare interview clips of late Saawan Kumar speaking about his favourite film as well about his fruitful association with his ex-wife Usha Khanna.
