Synopsis

Ep 22 of GOLDEN CLASSICS revisits JAWANI DIWANI, directed by Narendra Bedi and produced by Ramesh Behl. It was released in 1972 at a time when Hindi cinema was slowly moving from the classical romantic mould of the 1960s into the more youthful, western-influenced narratives of the 1970s. It’s music, composed by R.D. Burman, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi became one of the defining elements of the film’s popularity. Featuring Randhir Kapoor, Jaya Bhaduri, Balraj Sahni, and Nirupa Roy, the film revolves around college romance, campus flirtations and musical interludes vis-à-vis class conflicts, parental authority and independence of the youth. The biggest strength of Jawani Diwani was its soundtrack by R.D. Burman, which captured the youthful energy of the time. Songs like “Jaane Jaan Dhoondta Phir Raha”, “Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani”, “Saamne Yeh Kaun Aaya” and “Nahin Nahin Abhi Nahin” not only topped the charts then but have gained cult status now. Burman’s fusion of Western instrumentation with desi melodies made the music timeless. JAWANI DIWANI became a trendsetter in youth-oriented romantic musicals and is remembered till date for its vibrant music and youthful spirit.
