Synopsis

We usually associate Manmohan Desai, the king of ‘Masala’ movies with the lost and found multi-starrers, made between mid-70s and late 80s. But he directed several blockbuster hits across genres in the early 70s also. Two of such hits were SACHAA JHUTHA (1970) and ROTI (1974), both of which starred the hit pair of the day, viz. Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz. So it’s a ‘Double Dhamaka’ celebration in the 7th Episode of Golden Classics as we re-visit ‘Sachaa Jhutha’ and ‘Roti’. Both films were directed with great panache by Desai and had very interesting storylines. In fact, ‘Sachaa Jhutha’ was a major source of inspiration for Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Don’. Both ‘Sachaa Jhutha’ and ‘Roti’ had great music with several songs ruling the charts. While Kalyanji Anandji scored 5 hits for ‘Sachaa Jhutha’, Laxmikant Pyarelal did wonders with ‘Roti’. Who can forget the evergreen melodies like ‘Meri Pyari Behaniya’, ‘Yun Hi Tum Mujhse Pyar Karti Ho’, ‘Naach Meri Bulbul’, ‘Ye Jo Public Hai’ or ‘Gore Rang Pe Na Itna Guman Kar’.
